Our Climate and Soil

Why we chose our location and what is it like?

Our Priorities

We chose the location of our project to be able to grow ultra tropical fruits like Durian, Cempedak and Mangosteen among others.
This was the number one criteria because self sustainability and fruit abundance is at the heart of what we do. I see too many people realize after 5-8 years that the elevation on their ocean view property or the clay soil that is present at the hills and mountains of Costa Rica greatly reduce their ability to produce, hence their project’s possibilities are limited.

Geography of Our Area

We are on a large flat lowland area on the South Pacific side of Costa Rica. About 10-15 km to the north begins a mountain range that regulates our rainfall during the rainy season as that’s where the clouds form each day and they arrive to us in the early afternoon hours. This also means we have a sunny morning most days even in the wet period.
In a lowland area like ours it’s important to have good drainage to avoid floods. The average drop on 100 meters is 2 meters on the properties around us and we are about 6 meters above the water level of the nearest creek.

Climate

Being lowland we have a hot tropical climate. The maximum temperature is around 33°C in the dry months and 30°C in the wet months. The average minimum temperature per day is 21-22°C.
Rainy months are from May to November typically have about 7-900mm of rain, the yearly total is around 6000mm. January and February are the driest months with 2-3 weeks at a time with no rain at all.
The regular dry season is a requirement for many species of fruits to start blooming while the abundant rain ensures a vigorous growth of our trees and plants.
